Incredible 1891 Jas A. Armiger Co. Shiebler Baltimore Turtle Crab Sterling Spoon
This is a very important souvenir spoon for any collection, and extremely aesthetically pleasing. It is a BALTIMORE (MD) souvenir spoon with the North Point monument. The handle features high relief seaweed, crab, oyster shells, and a turtle at the terminus. You can read about it Rainwater & Felfer’s American Spoons: Souvenir and Historical. It was made by George W. Shiebler and retailed by Justis & Armiger, but is also found marked James R Armiger, and the Jas A Armiger Co. This spoon is 6 inches long and weighs 34.56 grams. This particular example is marked STERLING and JAS A. Please note, this spoon is not marked with Shiebler’s maker’s mark. It seems generally accepted that Shiebler designed the spoon and manufactured it, but Justis & Armiger controlled the patent. There are other examples which do contain Shiebler’s markers mark.
