This Vintage Sterling Silver Souvenir Spoon features a Nude Woman holding a Paddle with a Canoe surrounded by Water. “Legend of the Maid of the Mist” is an Iroquois myth. This myth tells the story of a fair maiden willingly sacrificing herself as an offering to the gods by going down Niagara Falls in a canoe. While descending the falls, she was saved by Heno, the god of thunder, and taken to the world beneath the waters. There she married the son of Heno. Later in her story she is seen going back to her world to save her people from a poisonous snake sent to bring destruction to her people. Once she defeats the serpent he becomes a dam for the waters which the Iroquois people believe created the semicircle of the falls. Measures: 5 5/8 in length. Beautiful soft patina with crisp detail.
