See my other listings for more Catalina Island souvenirs. This is a very hard-to-find, antique large, heavy sterling silver souvenir fork and spoon set from Catalina Island, a popular tourist destination off the coast of San Diego and Los Angeles, California. The fork is hand-engraved 1914 on the back. The spoon bowl is embossed with a very early view of “Avalon Santa Catalina Island”, showing the bay with two piers and the Metropole Hotel. The handles are awesome, generally called big letter handles, highly molded. What I like about them is the little state symbols tucked inside and between the big letters. Some of the symbols are the state seal, mining shovels, the state flower, things like that. They were also made for other states and locations. Length: Spoon about 5-5/8″, Fork about 6-1/8″ long. Maker’s marks: “Sterling” only, but we think they were probably made by Shepard, an American company that made very good quality silver. A very, very knowledgeable friend said these were most likely made by Shepard, and I believe him! Weight: Together they weigh a very hefty 43.8 grams. Engraving: Only “9-20-14″ on the back of the fork handle. Any white, dark or other off-color spots are camera flash or reflection. Please bear in mind that color can vary from monitor to monitor.
