












Ute Chief Indian Miner Denver Colorado Sterling 5 5/8 Spoon by Shepard. Top of handle features. The Seal for the State of Colorado. At the top is the Eye of Providence or “All Seeing Eye” within a triangle, from which golden rays radiate on two sides. Below the eye is a Roman fasces, a bundle of birch or elm rods with a battle axe bound together. The bundle of rods bound together symbolizes strength which is lacking in the single rod. The axe symbolizes authority and leadership. Below the fasces is a heraldic shield bearing across the top a sky behind three snow capped mountains and clouds above them. The lower half of the shield has two miner’s tools, the pick and sledge hammer crossed. On a scroll is the motto “Nil Sine Numine”, Latin words meaning “Nothing without providence” or “Nothing without Deity”. Handle also features image of a miner working with a pickaxe and “COLORADO”. Bowl engraved with image of an Indian Chief in a feather headdress holding a shield and a spear and “UTE CHIEF DENVER”. The Ute people are the oldest residents of Colorado. This could be Chief Ouray or Chief Ignacio. Back of handle features flowers and swirls. Measures about 5 5/8 inches long. Weighs about 21.7 grams. Very nice Estate condition (see photos).
